If you are from Latin America, the first thing that comes to mind when you think of “mango” is the Caribbean, the “mangos”, the streets full of mangoes on July and having seen at least once that someone is enjoying this delicacy, but did you know that this fruit is native to India?
It was the Indian who baptized the mango with that name by the terms “mankay” or “mannga”. For them the mango is a symbol of love and a sacred fruit, since there is a belief that it is capable of granting wishes.

Also, did you know that there is a tradition of giving mangoes to your close friends and loved ones? This tradition originates from Southeast Asia where the kings and nobles who owned large plantations of mango trees, related their abundance with these fruits and represented pride and stability.
Mango arrived in Latin America thanks to the Portuguese in the 17th century. It was they who exported this delicious fruit to Brazil, and from there, it spread to the entire continent. Today, the Dominican Republic is the leading exporter of mangoes.
There are many types of mangoes. However, in Venezuela the best known and most consumed are:
• Mangas: Their name is due to the large size they have.
• Mango verde de hilacha: They are usually eaten when they are still green and therefore their flavor is more acidic. Although with a touch of lemon it is usually perfect.
• Mango piña: It is named for its flavor, similar to that of pineapple, and the color of the mango, which usually has a yellowish hue.
• Manga de hilacha: It is one of those with the highest amount of fiber, its color is usually yellow with orange and its flavor is sweet.
• Mango de bocado or mango bocao: They are very small mangoes, almost to be eaten in a single bite, hence their colloquial name.
Although not everything is the color of roses, can you believe that the leaves of the mango tree are toxic to cows? This is because these leaves have a component called mangiferin, which can be really irritating, so its consumption can be harmful to them. This was discovered in India when the leaves of the mango bush were fed to cows to obtain the euxanthic acid in their urine, but this method was eventually discontinued.
You wonder what other qualities does the mango have?
Mango is a natural ally for softening meats, especially red ones, so using mango pieces when marinating will give excellent results! And it will help the digestion process, as it has enzymes that help synthesize proteins..
